Day 1 Tarquinia
Arrival in Tarquinia, eternal symbol of the Etruscan civilization and one of the most traditional and well-known places in Tuscia. Lunch booked in a restaurant followed by a tour of the Etrusca Necropolis with its magnificent painted tombs in the early afternoon and visit to the Museo Nazionale Etrsusco, which conserves precious archeological artifacts within the beautiful sixteenth century Palazzo Vitelli.
Transfer to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Viterbo, Caprarola and Bagnaia
Breakfast, then transfer to Viterbo, known as “City of the Popes”, for guided tour of the city. A unique and spectacular event celebrating Santa Rosa takes place in Piazza del Plebiscito every September. The visitor can also admire Palazzo Farnese during the tour, together with the fabulous Palazzo dei Papi, where the first ever Papal Conclave was held. Lunch booked in a restaurant then afternoon dedicated to the guided tour of Villa Lante in Bagnaia and Palazzo Farnese in Caprarola.
Villa Lante, once a hunting estate for clerics, is a splendid example of a sixteenth century residence, enhanced by its beautiful Italian gardens with a pathway leading the visitor around the grounds. The imposing Palazzo Farnese di Caprarola, on the other hand, is the greatest late renaissance work ever to have been built. The building was one of the many mansions the Farnese built on their lands. Initially, it would have had the defensive features of a fortification, but the structure, while maintaining its original pentagonal layout, was transformed into this stately Renaissance building that then became the summer residence of the Cardinal and his court. In the evening return to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3 Civita di Bagnoregio and Lago di Bolsena
Breakfast and departure for visit to Civita di Bagnoregio, the “dying city”, situated in the centre of the Calanchi valley and accessed by a picturesque, narrow walkway with superb panoramic views.
Civita, built upon a outcrop of tufa rock, stands alone in the valley and has gradually been decaying throughout the centuries as a result of the landslides and earthquakes that have undermined its stability. The visit includes the cathedral, the house in which Saint Bonaventure was born and all the corners of this silent town. Then on to Bolsena Lake for fish lunch booked in a restaurant , followed by a short boat excursion in the early afternoon. Then guided tour of Bolsena, including a visit to the Church of Saint Catherine, conserving, within its walls the stone bearing the Saint’s prints. Evening return to hotel in the for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 4 – Orvieto
Breakfast and departure for Orvieto, one of Italy’s most ancient cities with its early settlement dating back to the IX century BC and the Etruscan era, built within the tuff caves, dug out from the massive outcrop on which the Umbrian town arises today. The guided tour includes entrance to the magnificent cathedral, a colourful example of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, packed with works of art and safeguarding many masterpieces within its walls, including the famous frescoes by Luca Signorelli and the Corporale Reliquary. Lunch booked in a restaurant then departure for return journey.
