DAY 1: ROME
Arrival at airport in Rome and transfer to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 2: ROME
Breakfast in hotel. Full day guided tour of main monuments of Rome: the Colosseum, symbol of the city, the Roman Forum, for centuries centre of the public life, Piazza Venezia, where many of the city’s very important streets converge, Trevi Fountain, one of the most famous fountains in the world, the Spanish Steps, overlooking the famous Piazza Di Spagna, the centre of cultural and tourist life in Rome, the Pantheon, one of the best preserved monuments in Rome, safeguarding the tombs of some of Italy’s most famous kings and Piazza Navona, the elegant square with its many cafes attracting crowds of tourists throughout the year.
Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Rome.
DAY 3: ROME – PERUGIA
Breakfast in hotel and move to St Peter’s Square for Papal Audience.
Afternoon guided tour of St Peter’s Basilica and the tomb of the Popes. Afterwards, tour of two other important churches: Santa Maria Maggiore, the most important church consecrated to the Virgin Mary and St Paul Fuori le Mura, the biggest church in Rome after St Peter’s Basilica.
Transfer to Perugia for dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
DAY 4: PERUGIA
Breakfast in hotel. Morning guided tour of Perugia the regional capital and largest city of Umbria, situated on a panoramic hilltop. The historical center is connected to car parks by a series of escalators. A surprising city, thanks to the variety and quality of its ancient and medieval attractions: Rocca Paolina, Fontana Maggiore, Priori Palace, Etruscan Arch, and others.
In the afternoon free time for individual activities.
Dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
DAY 5: CITTA’ DI CASTELLO – LA VERNA
Breakfast in hotel. Tour of Città di Castello, a town situated on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. Included in the visit: the medieval Cathedral, the 14th-century Podestà Palace and the Bishop’s Tower, all overlooking the central square, and some important churches. Several museums are to be found in this town, associated with famous artists of the Renaissance and the contemporary artist Alberto Burri.
In the afternoon continuation to the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna situated in the centre of the Tuscan Apennines where the Saint is believed to have received the stigmata; visit to the sanctuary and participation in the Mass.
Dinner and overnight stay in hotel in Perugia.
DAY 6: ASSISI
Breakfast in the hotel. The entire day is dedicated to the tour of Assisi. The main places to visit are the Basilica of Santa Chiara, dedicated to the founder of the order of the Poor Clares, buried in the crypt of the church where the Crucifix said to have spoken to St Francis is also preserved, and Piazza del Comune, with its civic buildings dating back to Medieval times, the People’s Tower and an interesting sacred Roman construction, the Minerva temple. The most important church in the town is the Basilica of San Francesco, the centre of the Franciscan spirituality and cradle of medieval European art. The Basilica was built upon the Saint’s tomb and contains some of the finest paintings of Italian Medieval artists, such as Cimabue, Giotto and others.
Return to hotel in Perugia for dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 7: SPOLETO- MARMORE FALLS – GRECCIO – TERNI
Breakfast in the hotel. In the morning guided tour of Spoleto, a town situated in a strategic position overlooking the ancient “Via Flaminia”. The tour includes the Tower Bridge, a powerful 14th-century structure which was used both as aqueduct and walkway and admired by the German poet Goethe and the Cathedral, a masterpiece of Romanesque art whose facade has ornate rose windows and a beautiful Byzantine mosaic.
Afterwards move to Marmore Falls near Terni for a short visit and continuation to Greccio to visit the famous Franciscan Sanctuary. Greccio is known as the place where, in December 1223, St Francis created the first living crib (‘presepe’ in Italian) in December 1223.
Transfer to Terni for dinner and overnight stay in hotel.
DAY 8: AIRPORT TRANSFER
Breakfast in the hotel and transfer to Perugia or Rome airport for return flight.
